RICK TORRES' STATEMENT ON BALLOT QUALIFICATION

Rick Torres, who is running for the Republican nomination in Connecticut's 4^th District, the seat currently held by Jim Himes, has issued the following statement on the Secretary of State's announcement regarding ballot qualifiers today. Torres is excited to have his ideas aired alongside those of fellow Republicans Robert Merkle and Dan Dibecella.

"This is going to be an exciting race and, I believe, a definitive race for the nation. The voters of Connecticut's Fourth have clear choices between a candidate who has as his base, the Republican establishment and a candidate who has the support of some of the louder voices in the Tea Party movement. In me they have a third choice: a candidate who derives his support from regular folks across the District who just simply want to be left alone to raise their families and run their businesses."

"I have struggled and fought from the time that my family fled Cuba and have risen from the oppression of the public housing system to have my name on a ballot for United States Congress. It is really quite an honor and I am happy that the voters had the faith in me to sign my nomination papers"

"It is an interesting year to be in a race. So many want to hold on to their power and others are just swinging wildly because they are angry. We need a reasoned dialogue with the people because it is their lives and their freedoms that are at stake here. Insiders must put aside their allegiances and some in the debate must tone down their anger. We need to come up with real solutions to restore our nation to her place as a shining light for democracy around the globe."

Torres, who was born in Bridgeport, moved back to his family's native Cuba when he was a young boy. It took his father five years after Fidel Castro came to power to secure permission to return to America's shores. In 1967, Rick and his brother were brought back to Bridgeport—with not much more than the clothes on their backs. The family lived across from the PT Barnum Public Housing Project and Torres worked his way through college in a series of construction trades jobs. He eventually studied for a PhD in microbiology but, like many folks, had to quit graduate school in order to support his young family.

Torres and Michelle, his wife of 27 years, started a series of small businesses, working double shifts for years. Eventually, they bought Harborview Market: a once thriving neighborhood store which had fallen on desperate times. Harborview is once again a successful business and was the site of today's press conference.

In 2003, Rick ran for Mayor of Bridgeport on the Republican Ticket. Prior to his Mayoral run, Rick took an active role in a number of neighborhood and community organizations, and ran for several local government offices. Rick and Michele have five children: John, Alex, Michael, Kaitlyn, and Gabbi. They live in Bridgeport.

Dear friends,

Recent reporting in the Jewish Ledger on June 9th indicates just how unwilling Jim Himes is to take a strong position in support of Israel. The full story can be found at www.jewishledger.com.

It is clear that we need a Congressman who is unequivocal in his support for Israel. Jim Himes says he supports Israel, but then is unwilling to take a strong stand to support our ally when they are most in need. The United States needs to support Israel as they work to secure their borders and stop weapons from reaching terrorist groups like Hamas. Fairfield County deserves a Congressman who will speak strongly and clearly for our allies in Israel.

I firmly believe the U.S. should stand with our allies in Israel and promote the removal of terrorist organizations like Hamas from power."

Rick Torres, candidate for Congress in Connecticut’s 4th district, today announces his support of the “Contract From America”. “This effort embodies my beliefs in our Republic,” Torres stated. “It is an effort to have policies come from the citizens instead of the self-appointed political class, it is concept we need to return to.”

The Contract From America was created by the grassroots Tea Party movement in an effort to articulate policies they except candidates to represent. The group’s website,www.contractfromamerica.com, allows activists from around the country to vote for their top ten most important policies.

Of the issues listed, Torres believes that stopping tax hikes, protecting the Constitution ending runaway government spending are extremely important. “Notice how much more responsible the policies that the people are advocating are compared to those of our politicians,” Torres noted. “We can’t tax our way out of a recession or spend our way to prosperity, yet the backwards policies of Nancy Pelosi and the incumbent politicians propose just that.”

Today at the CPAC meeting in Washington, former House Speaker Dick Army will throw his support behind this effort. Torres promises to be active in the Contract From America effort. “The fact is, nothing is going to change until we change the people we elect to serve us. This contract will hold our politicians feet to the fire and I expect voters to hold my feet to the fire too. The only difference is I won’t disappoint them.”

PRESS RELEASE: Congressional Candidate, Rick Torres, Blasts Banking Reform as Diversionary Tactic

A press release from Rick Torres, a U.S. congressional candidate in Connecticut’s 4th district, found it's way into my email box. The release is impressive:

Rick Torres, candidate in Connecticut’s 4th congressional district, today urged the president to resist further regulation of the banking industry. In a statement issued today, Torres said, “Lack of regulation was not the cause of our present financial crisis. The exact opposite is true.”

Torres pointed to the creation of the now bankrupt Fannie Mae and Fannie Mae, to President Carter's Community Reinvestment Act of 1977, to President Clinton's 1999 forcing of banks to lower their lending standards to increase the number of loans to 'distressed inner city areas', and to the Federal Reserve's policy of keeping interest rates artificially low for the few years leading to the crisis.

“Banks never gave out risky loans prior to these government initiatives,” Torres continued. “But when the government started to use the free market for social engineering, banks no longer acted prudently. This caused our financial crisis.”

According to Torres, President Obama’s push for banking regulation is nothing more than a populist move to distract voters from the public rejection of his other policies in the face of the voter backlash in Massachusetts’ election on January 19th.

“Not only is his push for more banking reform dangerous, but the timing is suspicious. I suspect this is merely a ploy to distract voters from Tuesday’s election in Massachusetts, where the public soundly defeated his other attempts to regulate our economy,” Torres noted.

“Allow banks to act in their own self interest, without government manipulation, they won’t give risky loans. It’s that simple.”

Of course, the social engineering that Torres speaks of resulted in much of the money, that the Federal Reserve printed, ending up where Torres identifies, but the crisis, itself, was ultimately a monetary/Fedeal Reserve event, and would have occurred in some fashion even without the disastrous housing legislation. 12/12/09 Linda McMahon Is Gaining Momentum

Dear Brian, Linda's upstart campaign to end business as usual in Washington and put people back to work is gaining momentum, and it is being fueled equally by growing support among Connecticut voters and impressive reviews by state and national political analysts. Ten days after announcing 22 first-round endorsements, Linda today released a second round. We are thrilled to announce the support of four Greenwich Republican leaders: Peter Tesei, Greenwich First Selectman Tod Laudonia, Greenwich Tax Collector Dave Theis, Greenwich Board of Selectmen Peter Crumbine, Former Greenwich Selectman As GOP leaders and activists across Connecticut continue to gravitate toward Linda, her growing momentum is reflected in public polling. The latest Rasmussen Reports Poll shows Linda has increased her lead over Chris Dodd, and now leads him 44% to 38%. Linda's momentum is being noticed by national media. FOX News' Sean Hannity this week remarked on his show: "She's outpolling Dodd." Pollster Frank Luntz responded, "She's going to do a smackdown" on Dodd. Respected publications in Washington D.C., this week made clear her campaign is the one to watch. Mr. Simmons has modeled himself as a movement conservative, even brandishing tea bags and a copy of his pocket Constitution during stump speeches, but his voting record as a member of Congress will give the 'tea party' crowd pause." Carpenter goes on: "As a member of Congress, Mr. Simmons was a co-sponsor of the House's 'cap and trade' bill and the Employee Free Choice Act, called 'card check' by its opponents. These two pieces of legislation are vehemently opposed by the free-marketers who drive the tea party movement." Today, as national news outlets report Congress is set to increase the federal debt limit by an astonishing $1.8 trillion, many fiscal conservatives are no doubt troubled to learn that Rob Simmons twice voted to raise the federal debt ceiling -- once by $450 billion and once by $800 billion. Linda's consistent and principled opposition to job-killing initiatives like Card Check and federal debt increases is bringing into focus the clear contrast between her and her opponents.
